When a leftover New Year’s firework was placed too close to a flame it exploded, injuring two people so severely that doctors had to amputate their hands. A third person suffered severe stomach injuries while four more were treated for minor injuries.
A Tivoli resident found an abandoned firework near his home in Lazio, Italy. He brought the explosive home and allowed it to sit in the same room with his family as they enjoyed an evening by the fireplace. The heat from the open flame set off the firework, injuring members of the family ranging in ages from sixteen to thirty-five.
Two of the family members suffered extensive injuries to their hands and were forced to undergo amputations. A third family member suffered severe stomach wounds in the explosion. The remaining four family members were treated at the local hospital with minor injuries.
