Explosion Accident in Wisconsin Mine Injures Worker.

Emergency crews were recently dispatched to a Wisconsin mill that is owned and operated by the Packaging Corp. of America (“PCA”). This was after receiving 911 calls reporting that a worker had been severely burned following an explosion accident within the mill.  This marks the third worker, in less than a year, that has been severely burned at the same mill.

According to reports, 53 year-old mill worker, Mike Slesicki, was working in the mill just after 9:30 a.m. this past Tuesday March 5. At that time, a boiler exploded. Slesicki sustained serious burn injuries in the boiler explosion accident.

Slesicki was initially taken to the nearby Ministry Sacred Heart Hospital’s emergency room. He was later transported, via medical helicopter, to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (“OSHA”) has launched a federal investigation into the PCA mill, which has been the site of two other explosion accidents. These prior explosion accidents also caused workers to suffer burn injuries within the past year.

OSHA has previously issued 90 citations against the company in the years between 2000 and 2010. OSHA has also levied a fine against the mill for safety violations back in January of this year.

Five workers have suffered wrongful deaths at the PCA mill since 2008.
