A report released this month by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) revealed that accidents involved cooking equipment are the top cause of residential fires in the US, accounting for roughly 40% of all house fires each year. In addition, over 27% of fire-related personal injuries stem from cooking accidents.
From 2008 to 2010, there was a yearly average of 366,700 accidental house fires, resulting in 2310 deaths, 12,550 injuries, and more than $7 billion in property damage.
On the heels of the report, the CPSC is urging all homeowners to ensure that they have smoke alarms installed in their homes and that those alarms are properly working. The CPSC further stated that consumers with working smoke alarms in their homes are half as likely to die in an accidental fire.
